What Navratri means
नवरात्र का अर्थ
"Nava" means nine and "ratri" means night. Navratri is the festival of nine nights (and ten days) dedicated to Goddess Durga in her many forms. It is a time of prayer, fasting, mantra, service and self-reflection.
"नव" का अर्थ है नौ और "रात्रि" का अर्थ है रात। नवरात्र माँ दुर्गा के विभिन्न स्वरूपों को समर्पित नौ रातों (और दस दिनों) का पर्व है। यह प्रार्थना, उपवास, मंत्र, सेवा और आत्मचिंतन का समय है।
Four Navratris are described in tradition. Two are widely celebrated: Chaitra Navratri in spring, which closes with Ram Navami and Sharad Navratri in autumn, which leads to Vijayadashami (Dussehra). The other two, in the months of Magha and Ashadha, are the Gupt (hidden) Navratris, observed mainly by devout practitioners.

Why Navratri matters
नवरात्र का महत्व
Victory of good over evil. Tradition remembers the Goddess overcoming the forces of ego and injustice. The story is also read as an inner one: the battle against our own fear, anger and pride.
अच्छाई की बुराई पर विजय। परंपरा में देवी द्वारा अहंकार और अन्याय की शक्तियों पर विजय का स्मरण किया जाता है। इसे भीतर की कथा के रूप में भी समझा जाता है: अपने भय, क्रोध और अभिमान से संघर्ष।
Discipline and purification. Many families fast, eat simply, wake early, chant and read the Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati). The nine days train the mind as much as they honour the Goddess.
अनुशासन और शुद्धि। अनेक परिवार उपवास रखते हैं, सादा भोजन करते हैं, जल्दी उठते हैं, मंत्र जपते हैं और देवी माहात्म्य (दुर्गा सप्तशती) का पाठ करते हैं। ये नौ दिन देवी की आराधना के साथ मन को भी साधते हैं।
Honouring the feminine. On Ashtami or Navami, many households perform Kanya Pujan, welcoming young girls as forms of the Goddess with respect, food and blessings.
नारी शक्ति का सम्मान। अष्टमी या नवमी पर अनेक घरों में कन्या पूजन होता है, जिसमें कन्याओं को देवी का स्वरूप मानकर सम्मान, भोजन और आशीर्वाद दिया जाता है।
Community and service. Navratri brings jagrans, bhajans and bhandaras, community meals where everyone eats together. Faith becomes service.
समुदाय और सेवा। नवरात्र में जागरण, भजन और भंडारे होते हैं, जहाँ सब साथ बैठकर प्रसाद पाते हैं। श्रद्धा सेवा बन जाती है।

At the temple on Basahi Dhar in Joginder Nagar, Navratri is when devotees come in the largest numbers. Many climb the hill on foot in the early morning and the temple hosts jagrans and bhandaras. Nag Panchami is another day of celebration there.
जोगिंदरनगर की बसाही धार पर स्थित मंदिर में नवरात्रों में सबसे अधिक श्रद्धालु आते हैं। अनेक भक्त सुबह-सुबह पैदल चढ़ाई करके पहुँचते हैं और मंदिर में जागरण तथा भंडारे होते हैं। नाग पंचमी भी यहाँ का एक प्रमुख उत्सव है।
